Leah and I were uncharacteristically quiet as Ramirez continued. Though the specifics were still being pieced together, Mort had been bludgeoned several times before his throat was slit and tongue extracted. His body had then been dumped, far enough off the beaten path for the desert scavengers to easily feast in solitude and where human foot traffic would not normally have been an issue. Mortâs killer hadnât accounted for the possibility that hikers would venture deep into the desert in search of various rocks and other treasures. Mortâs remains had not been the type of trophy they had intended to add to their collection, nor had their discovery likely been part of the killerâs plan.
I did a mental breakdown. To date we had two dead; oneâpossibly twoâmissing, two prime suspects and one unidentified impostor. Erica and Mort had been killed in the same manner and despite the fact they had worked together in the past, the only thing linking them recently was the book. I wondered how many others had been aware of the proposed tell-all, and if Erica and Mort had been eliminated to keep their mouths shut. Or as a warning to others.
This led to Vargas and Grace. While both had motive to kill Erica, Vargas hadnât even known Mort. Grace would have only benefited if Mort were still alive. Why set up two peopleâwho previously had no connectionâwhen they would likely be cleared once Ericaâs murder was linked to Mortâs? What were the killerâs motivations? To squash the book deal? If so, why eliminate both Erica and Mort? Had one of them seen something? Or posed some other risk?
And then there was the bartender, Darian. It was too soon to tell if he was really missing or simply trying to stay off the copâs radar for a different reason. Grace had made him seem like a bad boy. Perhaps once heâd thrown her under the bus, he belatedly realized his words bore meaning and to ensure their validity, the police would need to look into the background of the man whoâd spoken them. Maybe he had a few of his own things to hide. Unfortunately, until we found him, it didnât help us clear Grace or Vargas.
And who was this impostor? Though he had quietly stepped into another manâs shoes, it did not seal his fate as the murderer. At the very least, however, he did have knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the life and death of the man he was hired to or had volunteered to portray. I silently vowed to uncover his level of complicity and expose the truthâno matter what that truth revealed.
Processing the parts and pieces made my head hurt and didnât even take the outliers into considerationâthe issues that had no bearing on the murder investigation. It wasnât as though I needed a full-blown migraine but Clark had been uncharacteristically quiet after poisoning Nicoh. It made me antsy, knowing he was out there somewhereâ¦waitingâ¦watching. I hoped Martin would deliver some positive news soon.
